Ulaiwan’s Story

After falling in love and marrying an English man, Ulaiwan moved to the UK. At the time, she spoke limited English, leaving her unable to communicate with people; this left Ulaiwan feeling isolated. She didn’t want to go out, not even to the shops as she was afraid of having to speak to people.

Ulaiwan’s husband suggested that she take a course in English to help her make friends, so they looked for a course that offered English for beginners. Ulaiwan tried a college course, but it was too advanced and she found it impossible to learn. In a bid to get help, Ulaiwan went to the Job Centre and asked for advice. The people at the Job Centre were aware of the help that Liverpool Lighthouse can offer the community and they referred her to our ESOL project.

Of course it was not easy for Ulaiwan; she had never learnt any language before and it took a lot of hard work on her behalf. She said, “the teachers are really good, they are friendly and patient and now I can understand a lot more. The teachers here spend a lot of time helping me and if I don’t understand something then they sit down with me and explain it”.

This hard work on both sides has helped Ulaiwan to move through the different ESOL levels and she is now at an impressive Level 3. She has re-registered on the college course and can now understand and learn at that level.

Ulaiwan has said that the ESOL project at Liverpool Lighthouse has enabled her to have independence again, as she no longer has to rely on her husband. Liverpool Lighthouse were also able to help Ulaiwan gain an Independent Visa, supporting her through the paper work and stress. Ulaiwan said “the government aren’t easy to deal with.” However, gaining an Independent status has meant the world to Ulaiwan; having lived in England for 2 years, she has made a life here, but was worried about what might happen in the future.

Ulaiwan is a great ambassador for the ESOL project, recommending it to all of her fellow students at college and helping them enrol. Ulaiwan said “Liverpool Lighthouse has helped me so much, I am really grateful. It has helped me make friends and I am really happy now”.

Ulaiwan is now looking forward to continuing her education further and gaining employment.
