Jason’s Story

Jason, the Furniture Bank Supervisor, explains how he started at Liverpool Lighthouse and how the Volunteer placements the Lighthouse offer helped him.

“I’ve worked for LLH for 5 years now; I started originally on a placement called ILM, I couldn’t get a job or placement anywhere because I had a record. Having a record makes it difficult to get a job and the pressure lead to me getting depressed. I am very grateful to Liverpool Lighthouse for giving me a chance and I know I have improved since I’ve worked for them. I have a good relationship with the people here, they are good employers; the managers have a heart and I like the fact that we help people who come into the shop.

Over the years we have tried to help the community by selling our furniture in the shop at cheap prices; the shop is also a good place for people to come and have a chat. It’s a good place to make friends; I mean, I’ve known some of the people who come into the shop for years

I think there’s a bit of a gap from what people think we do and what we actually do – which is lots! It’s about helping people and the community in whatever ways we can and that’s the reason I like it here”.

Alfie, the Furniture Bank Senior Manager, says “when Jason joined us as a volunteer 5 years ago, he had very low self esteem but his confidence has grown and he has become a valued member of our team. After his placement ended, we took Jason on as a member of staff in the Furniture Bank. He is a hard worker and has been promoted to Outlet Supervisor; he is fantastic at his job. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, gain confidence and make new friends and we always like meeting people like Jason who want to help.”
