AMAZING GRACE FESTIVAL

One of Liverpool Lighthouse’s projects, City Sings Gospel, is spearheading an Amazing Grace Festival 2007, backed by Liverpool City Council and the Capital of Culture, to mark both the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and the 800th birthday of the city. The Amazing Grace Festival was launched with the advanced screening of Amazing Grace, released in cinemas nationwide on Friday 23rd March.

The highlight of our season of City Sings Gospel events will be the Waterfront Gospel music Festival on the 16th and 17th June. It will contribute to the annual Maritime Festival of Tall Ships, contributing in a significant way to the city wide 800th Anniversary Celebration of the city of Liverpool.

Tuesday Feb 6th: Advance screening of Amazing Grace at Liverpool Lighthouse - an inspirational story of a reluctant leader called to do the impossible and the loyal friends who risked everything to join him. This event brought together church and secular leaders from across the city and proved to be an extremely moving and powerful evening. The event commenced with a VIP reception followed by the screening in the King’s Hall. Jo Wylie, from Liverpool Cathedral, summed up the film describing it as such challenging and descriptive account of the life of William Wilberforce, revealing the opposition and struggles he faced before the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade. This is not just a date for the history books, but the triumph of vision and determination under the banner of "Amazing Grace".

Sunday 25th March: BBC Radio 4 broadcast and Set Free – Hot Gospel Showcase: This day, the anniversary of the passing of the Abolition Bill, began with a live BBC Radio 4 broadcast from the Maritime Museum featuring Senior Pastor of Temple of Praise Tani Omideyi , the Right Reverend DJ James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool and Love and Joy Gospel Choir. Events continued back at Liverpool Lighthouse with a Set Free Hot Gospel Showcase.

Sunday April 15th: Sunday Night Live at Liverpool Lighthouse – This City Sings Gospel event featured US gospel artistes Izzy and Keshia McFarland, Christopher Lewis, Manchester Gospel Artist Flame, Sanctified Gospel Choir and Jazz Gospel Saxophonist Alex Douglas.
